At Keystone Music Therapy we believe deeply in this quote. It was written by Heinrich Heine, who wrote many of the poems that Schubert used for this famous Lieder, and it seems to suggest that words have limitations as an expressive medium. It is at these limitations, Heine seems to suggest, that the medium of music can be utilised to allow expression. For many people this may mean that music can better express a certain feeling than putting it into words, this can be particularly important for individuals who chose not to or have difficulties using words. For example, playing a drum loudly may directly express a feeling of frustration, and this would be a safe and creative means of expressing what can be a challenging feeling.
